Photograph of many multicolored star trails over the silhouette of a rocky ridge. The sky is pre-dawn blue.

i’ve always wanted to revisit a pre-dawn star trails concept i did nearly a decade ago, but my camera battery never lasts the night. i woke up at 3 am to capture these star trails from 4:26 - 5:05 am

milky way

Photograph of a section of the Milky Way

two 30-second exposures at f/2.8, stacked using siril (pro tip: always double check your camera settings before running your sequence. don’t be like me wasting twenty minutes taking useless frames. two exposures was all i could salvage)

c/2023 a3

Picture of a comet on a starry background

it took me a week after c/2023 a3's peak brightness to finally be able to get a good picture of it because the weather was so uncooperative. at this point i couldn’t even see it with the naked eye, but that’s what a camera and tripod is for

50 mm, f/1.8, 4 s, iso 1600
Picture of four red, white, and blue fireworks over a body of water at night. On the right, there are several more red and green fireworks farther away in the distance.

ideologically i don’t believe in explosions day but it’s good for photography practice
Picture of the ocean, calm dark waters fading into a pale grey sky with barely any visible horizon line

this was an accidental picture taken when my camera fogged up when i was on the water, but the result actually has such a great atmosphere, even if it’s not at all representative of what the weather was actually like
met a dead crow when i was out walking today. it was lying fully intact (as far as i could tell) under a tree, so i have no idea what happened to it. this image is under the cut for animal death

Picture of a very large cumulus cloud over a lake at sunset, partially blocked by the silhoutte of a forested hill on the left. The sunset paints the lake, sky, and top of the cloud in soft blues, purples, and oranges.

i was sitting by the lakeside looking at this cloud but didn’t think anything of it because there was no rain in the forecast. then as i was driving back surprise! thunderstorm
Composite of 7 images of the sun in various stages of a total eclipse, arranged from left to right. The first image shows the uneclipsed sun. The next four show the sun’s face being increasingly blocked by the moon, until there is only a barest sliver left. The sixth image shows the sun totally eclipsed, allowing the corona to be visible. Two solar prominences are also visible as small red protrusions from the sun’s surface. The final image is of the “diamond ring” at the end of totality.

this total solar eclipse on april 8, 2024 was viewed from erie, pennsylvania, usa. the two small red features visible in the totality phase (second image from the right) are solar prominences
A black and white photograph of Horsetail Falls in Yosemite National Park, California, USA. The rock cliffs are dark and reflect the light where they have been made wet by the fall's spray. The sky is a cloudy grey.

since i'm thinking of actually using this dreamwidth now, i thought i'd christen it with the same picture i did with my tumblr a decade ago. still one of my favorite photographs i've ever taken
